One of eleven colleges in the City University of New York system, York College is located in the neighborhood of Jamaica in Queens. It was the first CUNY school founded after the reorganization of the CUNY system and enrolls about 8,000 students per year. The Department of Health Professions is located in the School of Health Sciences and Professional Programs and offers a Bachelor of Science in Health Science. Admission to the program does require a minimum GPA and some prerequisite courses.

York College designed the 56-credit major in a similar fashion to other programs that help students enter the healthcare industry. Basic courses include gerontology, public health, epidemiology, marketing in healthcare, and health informatics. There are also more advanced courses in topics like nutrition, nursing home administration, ethics, research, and writing. Students also have several elective credits, enough to potentially add a minor in a related field, or perhaps in some other area of the sciences or humanities.

Students are required to take two clinical field study experiences through affiliates such as the Queens Hospital Center, New York Hospital Queens, St. Francis Hospital, and Elmhurst Hospital Center. The clinical experience provides direct exposure to health care practices and meets a graduation requirement for the program. The College of Idaho provides a Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences through its Department of Health and Human Performance. CI was founded in 1891 and is the oldest private liberal arts college in the state. For a small school – student enrollment is a little over 1,100 – school alumni are very productive.

CI implemented a unique curriculum in 2010 called the PEAK curriculum which is divided into four broad areas: humanities and fine arts; social sciences and history; natural sciences and mathematics; and professional studies and enhancement.

Each spring semester, recruiters for the Clinical Care Extender Program come to CU to recruit students for valuable internship experiences, many of which are necessary for admission into many health care professions. There are also several student organizations tailored around specific health care interests, such as the Pre-Physician Assistant Club, where students can network, find out about clinical experiences, and build friendships with other students and current professionals in their field of interest.

Chapman’s Health Sciences major also provides focus areas where students are required to complete at least 15-16 credit hours. These include pre-physical therapy, pre-occupational therapy, pre-nursing, pre-doctor of podiatric medicine, pre-food science, and pre-medicine– among others. Within each of these tracks, students have other options, as well. For instance, if a student chooses the physical therapy track they can also apply to enter the Doctor of Physical Therapy bridge program which allows some of their undergraduate credits to be applied toward the DPT. This particular program requires a 3.6 GPA as well as successful completion of the GRE by the student’s senior year, and 40 hours of physical therapy observation/experience.

Located in Los Angeles, CA, the University of Southern California is a large private research university. The combined undergraduate and graduate student body in 2018-2019 was over 47,000 students. USC boasts a significant number of high caliber scholars with five Nobel Laureates, eight Rhodes Scholars, and five MacArthur Fellows on its staff. The university includes numerous colleges and schools, including the Dornsife College of Letters Arts and Sciences, which offers a Bachelor of Arts in Health and Human Sciences. Because of the rapid and radical changes in healthcare that have been evolving over the past decades the program is intentionally interdisciplinary, but with a strong science foundation.

The program requires several lower-division classes in the sciences, mathematics, and sociology. Students then choose between six different modules or concentrations. These include Health, Gender, and Ethnicity; Health and the Mind, International Health, Sociology of Health, Health and Aging, and Biology of Health. Each module carries specific requirements that add up to 16 credit hours. For instance, if you take the Health, Gender and Ethnicity track you can take classes like Gender, Sex, and Science or if you are in the Health and Mind track you can take courses like Stress, Health, and the Mind-Body Connection. Students must also complete an experiential learning component and are able to choose from a variety of electives to fill out their degree. Electives offered include courses in neurobiology, behavioral sciences, sociology of childhood, race relations, and community health scan. The BAHHS gives students a broad base for thinking creatively and critically about issues around healthcare as well as field experience so that students are prepared either to enter the workforce or to apply for further graduate education.
