  • 1. Jacqueline Shearer Memorial Scholarships

    The Ulman Cancer Fund (UCF) for Young Adults awards currently has two generous scholarships in honor of Jacqueline Shearer, a well-loved woman who fought brain cancer for nearly 12 years. These memorial scholarships are $2,500 each and were established to provide education funding for young adults battling the disease. Applications may be submitted online no later thanMarch 1, 2018.If selected from the first general pool of applications, more materials will be required for further consideration; these materials include corroborating information from oncologist physicians, an essay, and other supportive documents. Award recipients receive $2,500 over the course of two semesters.

    Applicants of this scholarship must fall into the following criteria:

    • Cancer patients under 40 seeking a higher education degree
    • Cancer patients experiencing significant financial strain due to treatment
    • Child or sibling of a cancer patient

  • 2. The Bernie Scholarship Award

    The Bernie Scholarship Awards Program was founded by Bernie Tetreault, a former Executive Director of the Housing Commission (HOC). This series of scholarships was established to assist low-income students living in Montgomery County, Maryland. Recipients of this scholarship receive funding for college courses, vocational training programs, or other types of education that lead to a bright future. The Bernie Scholarship Award is rooted in the fact that education is a provenly effective tool in fighting poverty. Applications for this scholarship must be received no later than March 20, 2018.

    Eligibility

    Applicants of this scholarship must fall into the following criteria:

    • Low-income students residing in Montgomery County, Maryland
    • Recipients of housing assistance from Housing Opportunities Commission Scotland Community or from housing owned or managed by Rockville Housing Enterprises, Edgewood Management, Forest Park Apartments, or have a Section 8 Public Housing rental subsidy
    • “Dreamers” who are ineligible for financial aid due to immigration status

  • 3. Maryland 2+2 Transfer Scholarship

    Established by the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC), the 2+2 Transfer Scholarship is awarded to Maryland community college students seeking to earn a bachelor’s degree. This scholarship is awarded in $2,000 amounts for STEM or nursing students, and $1,000 amounts for eligible students of all other types of study. Students awarded with the 2+2 transfer scholarship can renew for up to three years or six semesters of study; award recipients must maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA at a Maryland-based institution to renew. For priority awarding, students must submit their application by or beforeMarch 1, 2018.

    Applicants of this scholarship must fall into the following criteria:

    • Students intending to transfer to a Maryland-based non profit university
    • Students maintaining a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher
    • Students demonstrating financial need, as defined by an estimated family contribution of $10,000 or under

  • 4. Veterans of Afghanistan and Iraq Conflicts Scholarship

    Eligibility

    Applicants for this scholarship must fall into the following criteria:

    Offered by the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC), this scholarship opportunity was specifically established for U.S. Armed Forces whom have served in the Middle East. To be eligible, veterans must have served for a minimum of 60 days since 2003. The Veterans of Afghanistan and Iraq Conflicts (VAIC) Scholarship is also awarded to spouses and children of eligible service members. The maximum award amounts, given only to Maryland residents, range from $4,998 to $7,029. Applications for this unique scholarship must be received by March 1, 2018, with supporting documentation indicating eligibility.

    • Students demonstrating financial need, as defined by an estimated family contribution of $10,000 or under
    • Veterans or immediate family of veterans who are high school seniors, full or part-time undergraduate students enrolled in an accredited Maryland-based postsecondary institution

  • 5. Carville M. Akehurst Memorial Scholarship

    Since 2002, the Mid-Atlantic Nursery Trade Show (MANTS) has provided annual $2,000 scholarships to two selected undergrad or graduate students. This horticulture-based award was established in memory of Carville Akehurst, the founder of MANTS and an important figure in the field. The Carville M. Akehurst scholarship is open to horticulture students in the states of Maryland, Virginia, or West Virginia. Applications must be received byMay 31,2018, and the maximum amount awarded is $4,000.

    Eligibility

    Applicants of this scholarship must fall into the following criteria:

    • A resident of one the Mid-Atlantic Nursery Trade Show(MANTS) member states, Maryland, Virginia, or West Virginia. However, enrollment in an academic institution within these states is not required
    • Enrolled in an accredited undergraduate or graduate landscape, horticulture, or similar program
    • Students maintaining a minimum GPA of 2.7 or higher in their landscape or horticulture major
