How to Become a Resident
Being a resident is an essential step for securing in-state tuition costs. South Dakota is one of the more lenient states and allows for not-as-stringent terms with regards to residential classification. First an individual must establish domicile. This is achieved when an individual has lived consistently in the state of South Dakota for 12 consecutive months. This must occur before applying to programs. After 12 months of continuous presence in South Dakota, those who were initially classified as "nonresidents" may petition for reclassification.
